Love your subject and want to share it with the next generation?

Secondary teachers turn what they’re passionate about—math, science, history, English, art, technology, and more—into meaningful learning experiences for middle and high school students. You’ll challenge students to think deeper, ask questions, solve problems, and connect what they learn to the world around them.

Your impact: Help students discover their strengths, build confidence, and see possibilities for their future. You might be the teacher who makes a student say, “I’m actually really good at this!”

Could This Be Me?

A career as a secondary teacher could be a great fit if you:

  • Love a particular subject and want to share it with others
  • Enjoy explaining how or why something works
  • Like solving problems and finding different ways to approach them
  • Want to work with teenagers
  • Are creative, patient, and encouraging
  • Enjoy leading discussions or activities
  • Like seeing the moment when someone finally says, “Ohhh, I get it!”
  • Want a career where no two days are exactly the same

What Would My Day Look Like?

  • Teach your subject in creative and engaging ways
  • Lead discussions, projects, labs, activities, and hands-on learning
  • Help students understand challenging ideas
  • Encourage students to ask questions and think for themselves
  • Build relationships with students and create a classroom where they feel supported
  • Check student progress and find new ways to help when someone is struggling
  • Work with families, teachers, and other school staff
  • Help students connect what they’re learning to the real world and their future

How Do I Get There?

High School → Bachelor's Degree/Teacher Preparation → Florida Teacher Certification → Secondary Teacher

While you're in high school, explore subjects you enjoy, take education or child development courses if available, and look for opportunities to tutor, mentor, coach, volunteer, or work with younger students.
