Student Progression
All students in middle school receive instruction in approved state and district grade-level courses and standards. The middle school curriculum is comprised of courses in core academic and elective areas that provide instruction based on standards approved by the state of Florida. These subject areas include English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, world languages, and career/technical education. More specific information on these standards and courses can be accessed at this website. Depending on individual student needs and assessment results, some students may be required to enroll in remediation courses for mathematics and/or English Language Arts, which may take the place of electives.
In order to be promoted to high school, students must successfully complete the following required courses:

Middle school students enrolled in high school Algebra I must pass the statewide, standardized end-of-course (EOC) exam to qualify for a standard high school diploma. The EOC exam constitutes 30 percent of the student’s final course grade. If a middle school student does not pass the EOC assessment in middle school, the student will have multiple opportunities in high school to retake the course and/or assessment. |

Middle school students enrolled in Biology I must earn a passing score for the course and take the statewide, standardized Biology I EOC assessment to earn high school credit for the course. The EOC exam constitutes 30 percent of a student’s final course grade. |

** Students scoring Level 1 or Level 2 on the state FSA ELA assessment may be enrolled in an intensive reading course in lieu of an elective course. Students scoring Level 1 or Level 2 on the state FSA Mathematics assessment may also be enrolled in an intensive math course in lieu of an elective course.

High School Coursework Taken During Middle School
Students may take selected high school courses in middle school. Factors to consider in taking high school courses as a middle school student include the student’s maturity, motivation, and ability to balance rigorous academic requirements.
High school credit may be earned for EOC courses such as Algebra I, biology, and geometry, provided that all applicable end-of-course assessment requirements are met.
All high school credit courses taken in middle school will be included in the high school transcript and will be calculated into the student’s high school grade point average (GPA), subsequently impacting class rank. These earned credits will be applied toward the total credits needed for graduation, college admissions, and/or the Florida Bright Futures Program requirements. Furthermore, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has outlined specific requirements regarding athletic scholarship eligibility for courses taken prior to the start of ninth grade.
